BigBrotherAwards 2009

Happy Birthday, BigBrotherAwards

We are celebrating our tenth anniversary! Time for a look back and for an interim assessment. The issues we work on have clearly received more attention – which is confirmed by former Interior Minister Gerhart Baum in his welcoming address. But that doesn’t stop many companies and governments from engaging in their data collection frenzy and surveillance mania. For example, the Berlin Organising Committee of the World Athletics Championships, or the notorious Ursula von der Leyen (she is the German Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in 2009). And we must not forget Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble, as he would like to develop the German Criminal Police Office (BKA) into a German FBI. In any case, they all receive a BigBrotherAward.

Trends and Outlook

More and more data is raised “incidentally”. Some could be avoided, but not all. We must think about rules that could make a digitally networked world worth living in – each one of us and most of all, all of us together. Because…

About BigBrotherAwards

In a compelling, entertaining and accessible format, we present these negative awards to companies, organisations, and politicians. The BigBrotherAwards highlight privacy and data protection offenders in business and politics, or as the French paper Le Monde once put it, they are the “Oscars for data leeches”.
