Audience Award (2020)

“Historical amnesia” shocks the most

Once again this year we asked our audience which of the awards they found particularly “impressive, astounding, shocking, revolting, …”.

The plans by the Conference of Interior Ministers to introduce a life-long personal identification number has been declared particularly shocking by this year’s BigBrotherAwards audience. As padeluun explained in a very personal speech, these plans reminded him of the darkest days of German history and clearly contradict the spirit the Germany constitution.

The award to BrainCo company and Leibniz Science Campus Tübingen in the Education category also worried many respondents. The awardees received their BigBrotherAward for developing EEG headbands that can allegedly measure students’ concentration levels via – a story that might be taken straight from a dystopian science fiction novel.

The award to car maker Tesla in the Mobility category was also mentioned numerous times in the audience poll.

About BigBrotherAwards

In a compelling, entertaining and accessible format, we present these negative awards to companies, organisations, and politicians. The BigBrotherAwards highlight privacy and data protection offenders in business and politics, or as the French paper Le Monde once put it, they are the “Oscars for data leeches”.
