Howto
Public Screening
1. Find a Venue
- Choose a venue where people can get together: a cultural centre, hackspace, an organisation’s office, a library, cinema, café, bookshop, …
- Make sure the location can be reached easily and with few accessibility barriers.
- Check early whether the venue has Internet access, preferably with LAN cables.
- Clarify the conditions for using the room. We recommend to put all agreements in writing.
2. Set up the technology
- Most important: a projector or large monitor, loudspeakers and stable Internet connection.
- Have a test run a few days in advance, check the Internet connection in particular.
- Have extension cords, gaffa tape, adapters etc. ready.
3. Invite people
- Post invitations early: via mailing lists, social media, and local contacts. We can supply posters and flyers.
- Register your event here: https://digitalcourage.de/public-screening (German form)
- If you told us about your event via the above form, we will also spread the news through our own channels.
- Make it clear that there will be no admission fee.
4. Plan the event
- The livestream starts at 18:00 (CEST, UTC+0200) and lasts two hours. You should probably start your event at least 30 minutes earlier.
- It would be good to offer a space for conversation after the livestream ends. Consider how you want to prepare this and whether you want to offer drinks and nibbles.
- If you like, you can deliver some comments from stage or host a panel after the gala.
5. Shape the atmosphere
- Create an inviting environment: seating, drinks, small snacks.
- Light design always makes a big difference.
- Have info materials from Digitalcourage to offer at the event (Flyers, booklets, stickers etc.). We’ll be glad to send some over and we have some English materials, too.
6. Private vs. public
- Public: you announce the event, promote the screening, we also list it on our website. You can potentially reach a large number of people.
- Private: if you are unable to host a public screening, you might want to watch the livestream with friends – cozy, but less visible.
7. Post-processing
- Make photos of your event, after obtaining consent from everyone, or let people know via posted notices on site as well as remarks in your invitations that photos and/or videos will be taken.
- Share your images and thoughts via your social channels, preferably the Fediverse of course, using the hashtag #bba25 plus your location. When posting on the fediverse, mentioning @digitalcourage@digitalcourage.social would be appreciated.
- We also invite you to send us some feedback – we’re always interested in your experience, which might also be helpful for other groups.
